Area Information

East Texas is a geographical and ecological area all or parts of 49 counties. Its exact boundaries are unclear, but "The Handbook of Texas" indicates that the region is marked roughly by a line extending from the Red River in north central Lamar County, then down and southeast towards Galveston Bay.

The majority of East Texas was first inhabited by Native Americans of the Mississippian culture, who are widely referred to as "mound-builders" due to their history of constructing earthen mounds for residential, ceremonial and burial purposes. European explorers came to the region in 1519. From then until 1848, all or parts of Texas were claimed by six countries: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas and the United States of America.

The Sabine and Trinity are the major rivers in east Texas, but you can also explore the Brazos and Red rivers in the region. Fish for white bass, largemouth bass, striper bass, black crappie, channel catfish, bluegill, spotted gar and more in these rivers. You might also want to check out Caddo Lake, a wetland located by the border between Texas and Louisiana. Here, you can reel in largemouth bass, white & yellow bass, crappie, chain pickerel, catfish and sunfish.

East Texas remains a secret to most folks. Let us show you what it has to offer.
